Old TVs Could Pick Up the Big Bang — You May Have Watched It as Static

If you’re old enough to remember analog television — the hissing “snow” between channels — then you have personally observed the Big Bang. About 1% of that static was radiation left over from the birth of the universe, caught by your TV antenna.
It’s called the cosmic microwave background (CMB), and it’s the oldest light in existence.
Here’s where it comes from. For its first 380,000 years, the universe was a plasma so hot and dense that light couldn’t travel — every photon was instantly scattered, like headlights in thick fog. Then expansion cooled things below a critical threshold: atoms formed, the fog cleared, and the trapped light escaped all at once, flying free in every direction.
That flash has been traveling ever since — 13.8 billion years — stretched by cosmic expansion from brilliant orange glow into faint microwaves. It now fills every corner of space:
- Around 400 photons of Big Bang light occupy every cubic centimeter of the universe, including the space inside your room
- It gives empty space its temperature: 2.7 degrees above absolute zero
- It was discovered by accident in 1964 by two engineers who thought the signal was pigeon droppings in their antenna. It earned them a Nobel Prize.
The deepest treasure is in its imperfections. Satellite missions (COBE, WMAP, Planck) mapped the CMB across the whole sky and found tiny temperature ripples — differences of one part in 100,000. Those ripples are the seeds of everything: slightly denser patches of the infant universe that gravity later grew into galaxies, stars, and eventually us. The map of the CMB is literally a baby photo of the cosmos, with our home marked as a faint smudge of potential.
Every cubic meter around you is still humming with it. The Big Bang never really ended — it just got quiet.
