The Hubble Telescope Launched Nearly Blind — and a Daring Repair Saved It

In December 1993, the Space Shuttle Endeavour rendezvoused with Hubble, and over five grueling spacewalks, astronauts installed a device called COSTAR — essentially a set of precisely shaped corrective mirrors, eyeglasses for a telescope. Because engineers knew the mirror’s error with extreme precision, they could grind the correction to exactly cancel it out.
It worked flawlessly. The “after” images stunned the world — sharp, deep, luminous. Hubble went on to become the most scientifically productive telescope ever built, measuring the universe’s age, watching galaxies collide, and staring into deep fields full of galaxies.
The rescue also proved something bigger: that humans could service complex machines in orbit. Four more repair missions followed over the years, astronauts upgrading Hubble like mechanics, keeping a 1990 telescope scientifically cutting-edge for decades.
The lesson NASA took away: the difference between disaster and triumph was one-fiftieth of a hair — and the willingness to go up and fix it by hand.
