There's a 4-Million-Sun Black Hole at the Center of Our Galaxy — and We Photographed It

Right now, you are orbiting a supermassive black hole.

At the heart of the Milky Way, 26,000 light-years away in the direction of Sagittarius, sits Sagittarius A* — a black hole weighing about 4 million Suns, compressed into a region smaller than Mercury’s orbit. The entire galaxy, our Sun included, wheels around the gravitational anchor it provides, one lap every 230 million years or so.

For decades it was a ghost we knew only by its effects. Astronomers Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez spent nearly 30 years tracking stars whipping around an invisible point at the galactic center — one star, S2, swings past at up to 3% of the speed of light. Only a black hole could explain those orbits. The work won them the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Then, in May 2022, the ghost got a face.

The Event Horizon Telescope — not one instrument but a network of radio dishes spanning the planet, from Hawaii to the South Pole, acting together as a telescope the size of Earth — released the first direct image of Sagittarius A*: a glowing golden ring of superheated gas wrapped around a dark central shadow. The shadow of the event horizon itself.

The technical feat was absurd. Resolving Sgr A* from Earth is like photographing a donut on the Moon. The gas around it swirls so fast that its appearance changed in minutes, forcing scientists to develop entirely new imaging techniques — the data was too large for the internet and had to be flown between continents on hard drives.

The strangest part may be this: Sgr A* is quiet — a barely-snacking, well-behaved giant. Other galaxies host central black holes actively devouring stars and blazing like beacons.
