The Most Humbling Photo Ever Taken Shows Earth as 0.12 Pixels

On February 14, 1990, the Voyager 1 spacecraft was 6 billion kilometers from home, its mission to the outer planets complete, coasting toward interstellar space.

Before its cameras were shut down forever to save power, Carl Sagan convinced NASA to do something with no scientific value whatsoever: turn around and take one last picture of Earth.

The result is called the Pale Blue Dot, and it is arguably the most important photograph ever taken. In it, Earth is:

  • Less than a single pixel — about 0.12 pixels, to be precise
  • A faint speck suspended in a band of scattered sunlight, like dust caught in a sunbeam
  • Utterly indistinguishable from nothing, unless you know exactly where to look

Every war, every empire, every love story, every human who ever lived — on that speck.

Sagan spent years thinking about the image, and in 1994 he wrote the passage that made it immortal:

“Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives… every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child… every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there — on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.”

He drew the conclusion, too: “There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world.”

Voyager 1 is still out there — now more than 24 billion kilometers away, the most distant human-made object in existence. Its cameras have been off for over three decades.

The dot it photographed has gotten no bigger. Only louder.
