Space Has a Smell — Astronauts Say It's Like Seared Steak and Hot Metal

You can’t sniff space directly — trying would be a brief and fatal experiment. But astronauts have found a loophole: when they come back inside from a spacewalk, the smell of space clings to their suits, gloves, and tools, and floods the airlock.

Their descriptions are weirdly consistent across decades and space agencies:

  • Seared steak” — astronaut Tony Antonelli
  • “Hot metal and welding fumes” — repeated by many ISS crew members
  • Gunpowder, sweet and metallic” — the Apollo astronauts, describing moon dust that got everywhere
  • “Burnt almond cookie” — cosmonaut reports add a slightly cozier note

So what are they actually smelling? The leading explanation involves dying stars. Space near Earth contains traces of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) — carbon-rich molecules forged in supernovas and dying stars, the same family of compounds created when you char food on a grill. These molecules settle on suit fabrics, then react with air in the airlock.

There’s also atomic oxygen — single free oxygen atoms, common in low Earth orbit — which cling to surfaces and recombine into ozone when they meet normal air, producing that sharp, electric, “burnt” tang (the smell you notice after lightning storms).

The Moon has its own signature scent. Apollo crews reported that lunar dust smelled strongly of spent gunpowder once inside the cabin — despite being chemically nothing like gunpowder. Harrison Schmitt, the only geologist to walk on the Moon, even developed a mild allergy to it: history’s first case of lunar hay fever.

NASA once commissioned a chemist to recreate the smell of space for astronaut training. So somewhere on Earth exists a bottled perfume of the cosmos.
